__HMH has essentially dismantled its paperback program for the children’s division. In its place, according to a company spokesperson, HMH has created a structure for editors to oversee the entire publication process of their books, from hardcover acquisition through to paperback publication. “At HMH BFYR we’re positioning ourselves to build on our tremendous legacy and successes and invest in new opportunities,” Cat Onder, senior v-p and publisher of HMH Books for Young Readers, said in a statement. “Our moving forward strategy is to empower editors to oversee all editions of their books for a more focused and streamlined publishing process.” The layoffs also affected editors and marketing, licensing, and publicity staff in the adult trade, culinary, and reference divisions. __”Changes in [Florida] state law have meant changes to the [K-12] book buying process for school districts around the state. Districts are required to publish proposed materials for a 30-day review period, during which parents can look over them and file any objections with the district if they see issues within any materials on accuracy or bias.” __Some may be interested to know there are no OER materials listed, in fact, likely one would find that these very same textbooks appeared on the 2007 list. Cuomo today announced that the Excelsior Scholarship, a first-of-its-kind in the nation program will provide tuition-free college at New York’s public colleges and universities to families making up to $125,000 a year, and is included in the FY 2018 Budget agreement. __The [Ontario Ministry of Education] announcement commits $879 million in additional funds bringing the total GSN funding for 2017-2018 to just over $23 billion. The additional funding is allocated in part to support the nine successfully negotiated collective agreements, which provide for sector stability and positive learning environments for students, as well as funds for school boards to support their delivery of education programs and services.
