    This talk was presented at Coventry University as part of my visiting fellowship at the Disruptive Media Learning Lab

    Every year since 2010, I’ve undertaken a fairly massive project in which I’ve reviewed the previous twelve months’ education and technology news in order to write ten articles covering “the top ed-tech trends.” This is how I spend my November and December – researching and writing a series that usually tops out at about 75,000 words – which I didn’t realize until print copies were made for my visit here is about 240 pages.

    Now, all those words and pages make this quite a different undertaking than most year-in-review stories, than much of the “happy new year” clickbait that tend to offer a short, bulleted list of half a dozen or so technologies that are new enough or cool enough to hype with headlines like “these are the six tools poised to revolutionize education.” To be honest, these sorts of articles are partly why I undertake this project – although each year, when I’m about 15,000 words in, I do ask myself “why am I doing this?!” (This talk will hopefully serve as an explanation for you and a nice reminder for me.)

    Toronto, March 28, 2017 – The Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) and Savoir-faire Linux Inc. have joined together to deliver the Small Business Digitization Initiative (SBDI). With this initiative being piloted in Ottawa, Toronto and North Bay, up to one hundred Ontario youth between the ages of twenty to twenty-nine will have the opportunity to receive twenty-four weeks of free training with the aim of transforming them into future business digitization leaders.     __Pearson chief executive John Fallon total remuneration rose from £1.26m in 2015 to £1.5m last year, even as the educational publisher slumped to its biggest ever loss and its shares fell to a seven-year low.     Financial Highlight –  Net cash provided by operating activities for the year ended Dec. 31, 2016 was $144 million as compared with $348 million for the same period in 2015. For the full year ended Dec. 31, 2016, free cash flow was a usage of $86 million compared to a positive free cash flow of $162 million in 2015

    __The Problem With Facts by Tim Harford . . . But Curiosity Is the Cure for Misinformation by Michael Caulfield _ https://lnkd.in/eawi96n _ _ https://lnkd.in/e33HZDG _

    Tim Hartford : We journalists and policy wonks can’t force anyone to pay attention to the facts. We have to find a way to make people want to seek them out. Curiosity is the seed from which sensible democratic decisions can grow. It seems to be one of the only cures for politically motivated reasoning but it’s also, into the bargain, the cure for a society where most people just don’t pay attention to the news because they find it boring or confusing.

    Michael Caulfield : But this is what wiki does, as opposed to blogging. It puts you in a learning mode vs. an argumentative mode. You can feel it when it happens, physically, when it lets down the rhetorical defenses you’ve set up. Ward used to call it Egoless Wiki. When people let down defenses enough to get there, to delight in the investigation more than the result, that’s when you’re in the zone. And I think it correlates with Tim’s point — that to have truth win we can’t fight for truth — we have to fight for curiosity and a bit of egolessness. We have to ask people not to argue their point, but to tell us what they know. In the end that’s the only thing that that’s going to save us.

    It’s fitting to talk about Adobe Illustrator’s 30th anniversary with two people who have been the bedrock of the Adobe Type team for the last 30 years: our Principal Type Designer Robert Slimbach, who celebrated his 30th anniversary at Adobe at the start of this month, and David Lemon, who retired last month after being with Adobe Type for just over 30 years as well.

            __[-] there has been more growth as the trend toward digital education continues. For example, Cengage is number 1 in market share for the Australian higher-ed market, and local versions of MindTap are being created to meet student demands. [Cengage MindTap ACE w/ OER] Staff: Over the course of FY 17, Cengage’s U.S. headcount grew by 7%. The product and tech headcount grew by 13%. There are currently 60 open spots on the technology side in Boston. Product Growth: The company saw strong growth in their digital courseware with a 10% increase over last year in student activations during the first 3 quarters of FY 17. Standalone digital sales are up 16% year-to-date. Also, MindTap, the company’s flagship digital learning platform, grew almost 38% year-over-year in terms of units and revenue.

            NM: You guys acquired WebAssign, can you tell me a little more about that? What drove that decision and what you guys hope to get out of it? [-] WebAssign had spotted another very interesting collaboration with OpenStax, which is a provider of open educational resources. They basically go out and curate resources that are available for free on the internet. They have developed a product together with OpenStax and that was something that we see is a significant opportunity for us as well. Because we believe that open educational resources are a part of the landscape in education right, and for some it’s actually very appropriate to have open educational resources as part of the digital solution.

                              The Federal Court of Canada has issued a massive damage award in the first major Canadian digital lock copyright ruling involving circumvention of technological protection measures.  The ruling, which is the first to conduct an extensive examination of the anti-circumvention rules established in 2012, adopts expansive interpretations to the digital lock protections and narrow views of the exceptions. The case confirms that Canada has tough anti-piracy laws with one of the most aggressive digital lock laws in the world and will fuel calls to re-examine the effectiveness of the anti-circumvention exceptions in the 2017 copyright review.

                              These Platforms Can’t Be Ignored

                              It may be in our nature to rail against publisher platforms, and some librarians may believe it is their responsibility as social justice advocates to demonize publishers for co-opting and bastardizing OER, as some journal publishers have corrupted open access. Breaking commercial publishers’ total control of learning content with the OER sledgehammer was neither easy nor inexpensive—and despite modest success, commercial textbooks still dominate. According to open education advocate David Wiley, it took years of effort and millions of dollars to create and introduce the OER we have today. Perhaps most difficult to overcome was faculty’s own reliance on commercial textbooks, to convince them to adopt OER. As supplemental learning content has exponentially expanded—slides, test banks, self-grading quizzes, and more—convincing faculty to adopt OER has only gotten harder. As Wiley puts it:

                              An OER advocate that walks into a faculty office and argues for them to trade their current arrangement (which increases the speed with which students receive feedback and decreases the time faculty spend grading) for static OER is going to sound like they understand very little about the realities of teachers and students. And they’re not going to be a very successful advocate.

                                Clint Lalonde is an educational technologist and an advocate for the use of open educational resources and open education practices in higher education.                                 Dr.Rajiv Jhangiani is the University Teaching Fellow in Open Studies and a Psychology Professor at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. He serves as the Senior Open Education Advocacy and Research Fellow with BCcampus, an Associate Editor of Psychology Learning and Teaching, and a faculty workshop facilitator with the Open Textbook Network.                                 Program Director: Kelsey Wiens is Creative Commons Public Lead for Canada. She has recently returned to Canada from Cape Town where as CC Public Lead for South Africa she held Africa’s first Open Textbook Summit, founded Open Textbooks for Africa and hosted Creative Commons Institute for Open Leadership.  In Canada, Kelsey works on projects advancing Open Access with SPARC and is the lead author for the OER Librarian Certificate for Creative Commons  You can find her at @bella_velo
