This talk was presented at Coventry University as part of my visiting fellowship at the Disruptive Media Learning Lab

Every year since 2010, I’ve undertaken a fairly massive project in which I’ve reviewed the previous twelve months’ education and technology news in order to write ten articles covering “the top ed-tech trends.” This is how I spend my November and December – researching and writing a series that usually tops out at about 75,000 words – which I didn’t realize until print copies were made for my visit here is about 240 pages.

Now, all those words and pages make this quite a different undertaking than most year-in-review stories, than much of the “happy new year” clickbait that tend to offer a short, bulleted list of half a dozen or so technologies that are new enough or cool enough to hype with headlines like “these are the six tools poised to revolutionize education.” To be honest, these sorts of articles are partly why I undertake this project – although each year, when I’m about 15,000 words in, I do ask myself “why am I doing this?!” (This talk will hopefully serve as an explanation for you and a nice reminder for me.)

One determines whether the college or university graduates students with the knowledge, skills and competencies the institution says the students need and will acquire if they attend that institution. High quality is achieved if graduates have the advertised attributes. Low quality is when they do not.

Here’s a concrete example: In 2013, Max Blouw, president of Wilfrid Laurier University, wrote in the Globe and Mail that “when a university graduate [of an Ontario university] is recruited, the employer has in their hire an exceptional communicator, an adept researcher, a problem solver and a critical thinker.” This is what is advertised and, frankly, what respectable postsecondary leaders say students need and will get at their institution. What is quality? The degree to which these advertised skills and attributes are achieved.

A lot of measurement questions remain. Next week my blog will report on an international gathering HEQCO is sponsoring in May on how to best measure academic quality.

Toronto, March 28, 2017 – The Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) and Savoir-faire Linux Inc. have joined together to deliver the Small Business Digitization Initiative (SBDI). With this initiative being piloted in Ottawa, Toronto and North Bay, up to one hundred Ontario youth between the ages of twenty to twenty-nine will have the opportunity to receive twenty-four weeks of free training with the aim of transforming them into future business digitization leaders. __Pearson chief executive John Fallon total remuneration rose from £1.26m in 2015 to £1.5m last year, even as the educational publisher slumped to its biggest ever loss and its shares fell to a seven-year low. However the spokesman said the board was freezing the chief executive’s base pay for 2017, the second year running, and would cut his long-term performance-related share award to reflect Pearson’s lower long-term profit guidance. _ This post is a summary of some my reflections following the 3-day OE Global conference, particularly with respect to OEP and open pedagogy.

OEP and open pedagogy

For some time now I’ve been paying attention not just to the nature of the work being done by many in the global open education community, but also to differences in emphasis across different sectors and regions. For example, much foundational work in open textbooks is rooted in and continues in North America (e.g. BCcampus Open Textbook project and Z-Degree programmes). More recently, a flourishing movement has emerged around open pedagogy (check out #openped) led by innovative educators such as Robin deRosa, Karen Cangialosi, Scott Robison, Rajiv Jhangiani, David Wiley, and others.
